Meal and snack replacement products helped participants in a German study lose weight-and keep it off. Losing a small percentage of body weight can make a big difference in reducing an obese persons risk of developing cardiovascular disease or diabetes. Yet maintaining weight loss over the long term can be a problem. A German study published in the August 2000 issue of Obesity Research reports that using one meal and one snack replacement product a day can help those whove lost weight keep it off.
For obese people, maintaining weight loss is often more difficult than the initial weight reduction effort. Typically, only half of all people who successfully lose at least 5 kg will maintain that weight loss for one year, and only about one in 10 will maintain it for five years. At the end of the one-year weight maintenance program, the ad lib, low fat group had maintained 13.2 kg of their initial weight loss of 13.5 kg, and the fixed energy intake group had maintained 9.7 kg of their initial 13.8 kg weight loss. At follow-up, regained weight was greater in the fixed energy intake group than in the ad lib, low fat group. At this time, 65% of the ad lib group and 40% of the fixed energy group had maintained a weight loss of more than 5 kg. These data indicate that an ad lib, low fat, high carbohydrate diet is superior to a fixed energy intake diet in maintaining a substantial weight loss. The mechanism by which the ad lib, low fat diet prevents relapse may be both by reducing energy intake and by increasing energy expenditure, although the effect on appetite seems to be more important.

One of the most important costs of inflation the uncertainty it creates about future inflation. This uncertainty clouds the decisionmaking of consumers and businesses and reduces economic well-being. Without this uncertainty, consumers and businesses could better plan for the future. While most previous studies have found a positive relationship between inflation and inflation uncertainty, a few key studies have not. Previous studies may be flawed, however, because they ignore a general downtrend in inflation uncertainty that has occurred over time. Reasons for the downtrend–which is independent of the level of inflation–are not well understood. Nevertheless, accounting for the downtrend is important in determining the true relationship between inflation and inflation uncertainty. This article accounts for the downtrend in inflation uncertainty and finds unambiguous evidence that inflation uncertainty rises with inflation. The first section identifies the consequences of uncertainty about inflation and discusses some likely causes of the positive relationship between inflation and inflation uncertainty. The second section reviews the results and inconsistencies in previous research. The third section presents empirical evidence resolving these inconsistencies and pointing to a robust positive relationship between inflation and inflation uncertainty.
But the situation is even worse than this, because. inflation does not and cannot affect everyone evenly. Some suffer more than others. The poor are usually more heavily taxed by inflation, in percentage terms, than the rich, for they do not have the same means of protecting themselves by speculative purchases of real equities. Inflation is a kind of tax that is out of control of the tax authorities. It strikes wantonly in all directions. The rate of tax imposed by inflation is not a fixed one: it cannot be determined in advance.. Like every other tax, inflation acts to determine the individual and business policies we are all forced to follow. It discourages all prudence and thrift. It encourages squandering, gambling, reckless waste of all kinds. It often makes it more profitable to speculate than to produce. It tears apart the whole fabric of stable economic relationships. Its inexcusable injustices drive men toward desperate remedies. It plants the seeds of fascism and communism. It leads men to demand totalitarian controls. It ends invariably in bitter disillusion and collapse. Henry Hazlitt Economics in One Lesson (1979 ed.)

For Alexander Rodchenko, the years following the Russian Revolution heralded not only vast social upheaval, but also a sea- change in how the photographer and graphic designer viewed his art. More than half a century after his death, the Hayward Gallery presents Revolution in Photography, a major retrospective of this hugely influential innovator. Shot from unexpected angles that challenge the perception of the viewer and pull the abstract from the everyday, Rodchenkos photographs charted the shifting dynamics of life in the Soviet Union. TV3 had to turn away almost HALF of the applicants for its new reality show - because they were just too potty for plastic surgery. The makeover show, Inside And Out, will air in February, with four contestants changing every aspect of their lives. Last night Halina Ashdown Sheils, one of the panellists on the show, said finding the final four had become quite ugly.
In addition, plastic surgeons have sought to develop better techniques for the treatment and repair of skin damage resulting from burns, and improved techniques for the repair of congenital deformities of the hand and craniofacial reconstruction for repair of cleft lip and palate , one of the most common plastic surgeries for babies, children, and adolescents
A relatively small percentage of plastic surgery procedures are performed on patients under 18 for cosmetic purposes. These procedures include otoplasty (correcting prominent ears) and rhinoplasty (reshaping the nose); and breast augmentation and breast reduction. Data from the American Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons on cosmetic procedures performed on patients under age 18 are shown in the accompanying table.
OPERATION SMILE INTERNATIONAL
In 1982, plastic surgeon William Magee and his social worker wife, Kathleen, founded the nonprofit organization Operation Smile. As of 1996, the organizations surgeons had performed surgery on 18,000 children in 15 countries. Surgeries performed included cleft lip and palate correction, and burn scar correction.
| Procedure | Total number | Percentage of patients (all ages) |
|---|---|---|
| Breast augmentation | 1,172 | 1% |
| Breast reduction in males | 1,319 | 22% |
| Ear surgery | 2,470 | 34% |
| Nose reshaping | 4,313 | 9% |

My car insurance has doubled over the past few years: The company says the state has allowed it to raise the rate. Im fed up with the high cost of insurance. Where can I find information to help me choose a new carrier? As you enlist competitive quotes, Edmunds.com, a consumer automotive site, advises you to take note of the following:
One in 10 respondents said they had made changes to the look of their vehicle including fitting a body kit or spoiler, non-standard alloy wheels or tinted windows. Around 7 per cent had made changes that affect the way the car drives, including fitting a sports exhaust, lowering the suspension, fitting a microchipped engine- management system or re-boring an engine. If not disclosed, modifications could invalidate a car insurance policy. Although the majority of insurers would not pay out on damage caused to the changed parts of the car in the event of a claim, they would pay for any other damage or injury caused.

Fare Game is a young Invercargill company making a name for itself in the high-end game food industry. Peter Owens has the story. While New Zealand produces some of the finest game food animals in the world, it is only recently that we have been able to eat some of them. Indeed for many years deer were regarded as noxious animals as were (and are) rabbit and hare. And at present, neither trout nor wild duck may be sold or served to the public in cafés or restaurants. Fare Game (NZ) Limited in Invercargill is one of the processing companies in the South supplying this increasing demand for top quality game food.

Business Editors Slated for national launch in the first quarter of 2001, BlueBolt Networks initially will automate industry best practices for pre-sale product selection and improve productivity across the entire supply chain. Specific features include a comprehensive, high-definition catalogue of interior finishes, an intuitive search that works the way a designer thinks, and one-click sample orders. Currently, commercial interior designers select surface materials using cumbersome physical sample books that are often incomplete or inaccessible, and are very costly to produce.
Lifestyle Editors/Feature Editors Our goal is to demonstrate to the public that no project is too large or too small to enlist professional help from an interior designer at a reasonable fee, said Diana Walker, ASID chapter president. Whether a designer transforms an outdated kitchen into a modern day dream space, or provides consultation on space planning, furniture placement or selection, accessorizing a room, or wall covering and/or paint color selection — maximizing the potential of a living or work environment can improve a persons well being, said Walker.

It does not grant them freedom to flout local law, although they may be immune to local jurisdiction to enforce such laws. This rule refers to its premises and diplomatic dispatches. But all privileges and immunities are solely directed towards facilitating performance of diplomatic missions.

Childrens Party Bag

Fashion needs the energy - and the dressing-up opportunities - of parties as much as it needs designers. And this week, the designers, photographers, models and fashion followers in attendance for the first leg of the show season have been partying as never before. But forget velvet wedges, Prada shoes for spring. The truly hip will be trying to beg, borrow or steal one of the fine, pin-tucked muslin aprons made by Prada for the waitresses handing out canapes. Guests caught in the fray of 1,400 carefully selected party people included Bjork, with a hairdo that looked as though she had been caught in a torrential rainstorm - which, indeed, she had - Naomi Campbell and Joaquin Cortes, Vivienne Westwood, the obligatory Tamara Beckwith, Zandra Rhodes, Stephen Fry, Simon and Yasmin Le Bon, and every fashion luvvie worth her little beaded bag and lacy chiffon under-slip. Miuccia got down to Eighties disco classics after her bangers and mash. On Monday night, the Natural History Museum was the venue for the Tommys Campaign charity dinner and Harvey Nichols fashion show, the perfect opportunity for more dressing-up, a concept that has escaped the London party scene for years. The Italian Vogue fashion eccentric and hat-stand Anna Piaggi changed her outfit no fewer than three times on Sunday. Eveningwear sales will be on the up this week as the fashion frenzied hunt for a new outfit for every occasion. By Friday, they will have been to parties hosted by almost every model agency in London and by the shoe designer Patrick Cox, as well as the ultimate glamourfest, courtesy of British Vogue. Between parties, the place to be is the bar of Christina Ongs modern, New-York-style hotel, the Metropolitan, where anyone who is anyone can sit people-watching while waiting the 45 minutes it takes for their pot of tea to arrive. Last night, before the party hosted by the Spanish designer Amaya Arzuaga, daughter of the Spanish red-wine-producing Arzuaga family, there was a private view at the RCA for the Puerto Rican illustrator Antonio Lopez. This shindig, hosted by Paloma Picasso, Jerry Hall and Calvin Klein, was a fond celebration of the work of the fashion illustrator whose drawings document the early Seventies to mid-Eighties. Lopez was himself an avid party-goer, dancing nights away in Seventies Paris with Paloma, Jerry, Grace Jones and Karl Lagerfeld in his flares, platform boots and silk scarves. His illustrations capture the sequins, the sparkle and glitter, the energy, gold lame, painted faces and false eyelashes of the disco era; there are many parallels to be drawn between Antonios world and that of the current mood of London
Luckily, Ive managed to avoid this particular form of repetitive strain injury. Incredibly, after averaging half a dozen parties a week for almost 20 years, I still love going out. As I squint into the bathroom mirror and put the finishing touches to my “look” - this doesnt take long since Im the spitting image of William Hague - my heart still beats a little faster in anticipation of the evenings entertainment. Since this usually consists of a free meal with a PR woman at some restaurant thats about to go under, followed by the opening of an envelope, you could describe this as the triumph of hope over experience. Nevertheless, the glass of cheap white wine is always half full rather than half empty. One reason for this, at least until I got married last July, was the optimistic belief that I might end up going home with some gorgeous model. Needless to say, this has never, ever happened. After living in New York for five years, and doggedly going to every fashion party I could, I discovered that pulchritudinous cover girls tend not to be very interested in short, balding, British hacks. As a rule, models dont date mortals. In 1999, in the run-up to Christmas in Manhattan, I went to 13 parties and the only time I managed to persuade a beautiful mannequin to stop looking over my shoulder for 30 seconds was when Joseph Fiennes wandered past. Among the New York glitterati, its considered so “trailer park” to gawk at celebrities that whenever one comes near they look anywhere but straight at them. Consequently, when Joseph Fiennes was standing right next to me, the frisky young model I was talking to looked me directly in the eye for the first time that evening. Then she followed Joseph Fiennes out the door.

Pills purported to augment womens breasts are not only unproven but may be dangerous, according to a Nov 17, 2004, news release from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. More than 30 herbal products that allegedly increase the size of womens breasts have been advertised on television, in magazines, and on the Internet, but there have been no scientifically sound clinical trials proving that they work.

To find a plastic surgeon in your area, click here What is the best procedure for me? Why are you recommending this particular procedure? What are the risks of silicone and/or saline implants for breast augmentation? What are the benefits of each? How often have you performed this surgery? What kind of results do you have?
Over 1 million women in the United States have breast implants. Breast cancer screening by mammography and physical examination is technically complicated in these patients, thereby raising the risk of late detection of a common malignancy. Mann describes physical examination and mammography techniques tailored to women with breast implants.Physical examination techniques should also be modified to displace the implant and ensure access to all natural breast tissue. In addition to conventional thorough examination in both the upright and supine positions, an additional examination is recommended in which one hand displaces the implant to facilitate access to an underlying wedge of breast tissue. This process is repeated until all natural breast tissue has been palpated. Finally, the integrity of the breast implants should be assessed. Changes in size, shape or compressibility may indicate an implant rupture.

Health is a measure of quality of life that is difficult to define and measure. In the 1940s, the World Health Organization (WHO) defined health as a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. At the first International Conference on Health Promotion in Ottawa, Canada (1986), the Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion built on the WHOs concept and further defined health as a resource for everyday life. a positive concept emphasizing social and personal resources, as well as physical capabilities. Good health enables one to function independently within a changing environment.

E-commerce today is enjoying the fastest growth rate of any business sector because, among other things, it is fast, convenient and cost-effective! Consider just a couple of examples I heard a consultant from Arthur D. Little present recently on CNBC: 1) A typical banking transaction, which costs one dollar, will only cost one cent when conducted over the Internet! 2) A typical brokers transaction, which costs $150, will only cost $6 when conducted over the Internet! Do you wonder why e-commerce, which is a direct result of Internet marketing, is experiencing explosive growth?
A review of the marketing literature in both the traditional (offline) and new era (online) environments was undertaken to compare and contrast marketings role in both types of organisation. Insights derived from this review formed the basis for a series of in-depth interviews with leading marketing professionals in Ireland. The paper draws conclusions regarding the overall effect of the Internet on marketing. In particular it notes that, while marketing has evolved into an all-encompassing role in the organisation, the marketer remains the focal actor. The paper looks to a future with two distinct kinds of marketer and highlights the importance of retaining the traditional commitments of marketing practice. The Internet is a significant global medium for communications, content and commerce. It is a powerful tool for building relationships with all of a companys communication targets. It is cheap, immediate and repeatable. With appropriate technology it can be personalised and is measurable. Building one-to-one relationships with customers online provides marketers with the ability to cut through the clutter that is characteristic of traditional marketing activities such as TV/radio and newspaper advertising, PR and outdoor, ambient media.

MILPITAS, Calif. — Nanometrics Incorporated (Nasdaq:NANO), a leading supplier of advanced metrology equipment to the semiconductor industry, today announced that the company has completed the sale of certain real estate holdings in Narita, Japan and Milpitas, California. We are pleased to announce the successful sale of our facility in Japan - which had sat unutilized for nearly two years - as well as the condominium in Milpitas, commented Tim Stultz, president and chief executive officer of Nanometrics. This announcement is another benchmark to demonstrate our companys ability to monetize fixed assets and dispose of businesses no longer critical to our mission, such as the machining and plating shop closure announced earlier this month. These steps improve our profitability and cash flow, similar to the successful second-quarter divestitures of the Yosemite CD-SEM technology and DiVA product line.
INTRODUCTION Turnover in the real estate sales business is reputed to be one of the highest in all job categories. Estimates from interviews performed with real estate brokers range from 50 percent within two years to 98 percent within five years.

“There are [more than] 30 million Americans who have no health insurance and another 20 million who have inadequate health insurance,” says Rep. Louis Stokes (D0Ohio), chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus Health Brain Trust. “It is mandatory that we begin to try and give Americans–particularly minorities–adequate health care as a right.” The Bush plan would give people not covered by Medicaid tax credits, and families making less than $80,000 a year tax deductions to pay for medical costs. He would also pass laws to ensure that even chronically ill patients could receive health insurance. The plan has received a cool reception on Capitol Hill, and alternate proposals, including a full-scale, government-paid national health insurance plan, are under development. But what does America really want for its health care system? The views are many.

Sharp conducted private demonstration for us in suite, using preproduction Zenith prototype player he said was produced by LG. Prototype was only working Divx hardware sample in Las Vegas, as Panasonic and Thomson showed nonworking mockups on show floor. In demonstration, Sharp scrolled through series of on-screen Divx menus he said proves that Divx is consumer-friendly system. Thomson will have national player rollout in July or Aug., followed by Panasonic month or 2 later, Sharp said. Sharp said hardware from at least 3 suppliers will be available nationally by fall. He also repeated prediction that additional hardware and software partners will sign on with Divx by time system launches nationally.Demonstration discs we were shown were produced by Nimbus, which Sharp described as someone weve been working with during the developmental process, and we would expect them to be doing some of the replication for us. But Nimbus wont be Divxs exclusive replicator, he said. Replicators have stars in their eyes because they look at Divx as an opportunity to generate very significant volumes, Sharp said. They want to see Divx succeed and theyre working very hard to make the economies work for us. He said therell be a lot of Divx discs out there. Based on assumption that traditional video rental store buys one copy of VHS tape and rents it 50 times, retailer will sell equivalent number of Divx discs, he said.As for software distribution, Sharp said that besides video software retailers, were having discussions with people outside the traditional distribution channels, such as grocery and drug chains. He said: Were covering the entire landscape here. However, software wont be available everywhere at start, he said: Were not going to launch with 50,000 outlets carrying the software, just as the video rental industry didnt start with 30,000 rental outlets. It started with a few outlets, and it grew as the market grew.
Despite a rocky start and widespread derision on the Internet, backers of Divx are remaining steadfast in their commitment to the digital, pay-per-view DVD system. Divx debuted nationwide in October 1998–two months late because of delays in obtaining a sufficient number of Hollywood films–amidst reports of sluggish sales during summer test-marketing in Richmond and San Francisco. We had one model player and got off to an admittedly slow start in the number of movies, Dare says. But we were encouraged by consumer response. Dare says consumers are attracted by the convenience of Divx, which allows them to purchase 48 hours of viewing time for $4.99. Instead of returning a Divx disc to the store when time runs out, the disc can be kept and reactivated for 48 hours for another fee, or activated permanently for up to $19.99.
Will Divx kill retail video rental specialists? The limited-play feature for movies in the new DVD format, backed by Circuit City, could sway the balance of power in the home entertainment business toward mass merchants and away from video rental specialists, according to Ron Berger, chairman, president and ceo of Rentrak, a firm that leases videocassettes to video rental specialists. He further predicted that if Divx is successful, it would turn the video business into something akin to the hit-driven sell-through video sales situation found today in mass merchants and convenience stores.

his was a planned pregnancy, but not for three,” said Detroit Shock forward Astou Ndiaye-Diatta, who on April 14 gave birth to two daughters and a son. In keeping with the name of the WNBA team shes played for since 1999, Ndiaye– Diatta, 29, said, “The first thing was shock,” when the doctor told her she was expecting triplets. “I thought, What does all of this entail? Theres a lot of responsibility coming.” Despite being the second woman in the WNBA to have triplets (Helen Darling gave birth to triplets in 2002), Ndiaye-Diatta deliberately kept her pregnancy quiet.
The concept of unintended pregnancy has been essential to demographers in seeking to understand fertility, to public health practitioners in preventing unwanted childbearing and to both groups in promoting a womans ability to determine whether and when to have children. Accurate measurement of pregnancy intentions is important in understanding fertility-related behaviors, forecasting fertility, estimating unmet need for contraception, understanding the impact of pregnancy intentions on maternal and child health, designing family planning programs and evaluating their effectiveness, and creating and evaluating community-based programs that prevent unintended pregnancy. (1) Pregnancy unintendedness is a complex concept, and has been the subject of recent conceptual and methodological critiques. (2) Pregnancy intentions are increasingly viewed as encompassing affective, cognitive, cultural and contextual dimensions. Developing a more complete understanding of pregnancy intentions should advance efforts to increase contraceptive use, to prevent unintended pregnancies and to improve the health of women and their children. To provide a scientific foundation for public health efforts to prevent unintended pregnancy, we conducted a review of unintended pregnancy between the fall of 1999 and the spring of 2001 as part of strategic planning activities within the Division of Reproductive Health at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). We reviewed the published and unpublished literature, consulted with experts in reproductive health and held several joint meetings with the Demographic and Behavioral Research Branch of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, and the Office of Population Affairs of the Department of Health and Human Services. We used standard scientific search engines, such as Medline, to find relevant articles published since 1975, and identified older references from bibliographies contained in recent articles; academic experts and federal officials helped to identify unpublished reports. This comment summarizes our findings and incorporates insights gained from the joint meetings and the strategic planning process.

Rules, which was founded in 1798 and specialises in game, oysters, pies and puddings, is at the back of Covent Garden, and is rather wonderful inside, especially if you are fed up with the sparse, blond-wood decor of most restaurants these days. The gorgeous Edwardian dining-room is a fabulous jumble of periods, styles and fashions, with heavy burgundy furniture, antlers, bits of stuffed animals, and wall-to-wall paintings of horses and fox-hunts and ships and the British countryside and stuff. There is also this enormous, bizarre oil painting — actually, its more a mural — of Margaret Thatcher, with the Falklands behind her, dressed warrior-style and with the most scary, whopping thighs. I am seated beneath it. Given the choice, I dont think I would choose to dine under Margaret Thatchers thighs. Given the choice, I dont think there is anything I would choose to do under Margaret Thatchers thighs. In short, under Margaret Thatchers thighs is simply not a place I would ever choose to be. But here I am. (I later discover that the artist, John Springs, also did the picture of me at the top of this page. It does not include my thighs. Thats my head. ) Egon arrives. Egon first came to Britain from Budapest in the 1950s, when cooking here was done without any feeling or care, tinned fruit juice was deemed a reasonable starter, and he was once asked to share a spoon (tied on to a bit of string) when he ordered a cup of tea at the Victoria station buffet. He takes his place beneath Margarets thighs. Egon is small, old, dainty, tiny. I worry for him under those thighs. Those thighs could do him in like a nutcracker doing in a nut. Crr. . . rrrr. . . ack! Given the choice, its not how Id want to go. But he is used to fearsome women. In the 1960s he toured the country as part of a cookery panel with Fanny Cradock. He once introduced a kindly cricket commentator, that nights chair of the panel, to her. This is so-and-so, said Egon. Oh, fuck off, said Fanny. It was totally shocking. The word “fuck” was not used very much then. The commentator looked at Fanny, looked at me, then said, “Im going back.” I had to drive him to the station. Anyway, he does like the room. Its got a warm feeling, he says. He scans the menu. This is not so good. He does not like the sound of todays special: freshwater prawn and diver scallop curry. If you are keen to say your prawns are freshwater and your scallops are dived-for, he says, youre saying you are proud of your ingredients. But if you are proud of your ingredients — delicately flavoured shellfish, particularly — why would you want to kill the flavours off in a curry? I think they are only pretending to be proud. I am beginning to get a picture. To start, he orders the mushroom and chestnut soup (£6.95), so I do likewise.
Take me to the river Christian Butler, late of the Adam Street club off the Strand and Baltic in Waterloo, is that man. Hes reinvented an old restaurant by the Millennium Bridge, taking it soaring upmarket; its unique selling point is that diners can gaze across the slimy, wolf-grey river, drinking in the sight of Tate Modern. Is that enough of a treat to bring people flocking? Luckily, his establishment has a second USP: it features almost exclusively ingredients and dishes from south-west England. The result is an almost unmitigated triumph. The bar is small and friendly and serves a wicked fino sherry. The restaurant is full of light and if youre lucky youll get one of the banquette-seating booths, in which you sit surrounded by mirrors and wallpaper featuring scenes of al fresco misbehaviour. My friend Sarah and I sighed over the menu; its one of the rare sort, on which you feel you could eat practically everything. Could you resist hogs pudding with honey roasted apples? Of course not (its a mild version of black pudding). Or Falmouth crab with clotted cream tart?
What was the Exmouth Bar Grill, as forgettable as its name suggests, seared its last steak, and The Ambassador has taken up residence in its place. With green Formica topped tables, grey lino floor and white globe lights its remarkable only for its bareness. There may not be much detail to the decor, but everything else has been thought of. There are proper aperitifs and, take my word for it, these appetite-sharpeners are becoming terribly comme il faut. I forgive them for not having my current favourite Lillet, try and reject Floc de Gascogne, and do very well with a Manzanilla. Drinks for hangovers include a wheat beer and Fentimans ginger beer shandy. Many of the wines are sold by the glass. The cogent list opens with France and Italy and refreshingly relegates the New World to a small league of its own. That this is not just another knocked-together modern British bistro or gastropub without the beer pumps becomes even more apparent when we meet the owner, Clive Greenhalgh, whose CV cannily mixes stints at The Eagle (EC1s original gastropub) and The Brackenbury in Shepherds Bush. Hes been backed by Mike Belben, half of The Eagles original partnership, whose Anchor Hope in Waterloo confirms he has the magic touch. I was encouraged to taste an aperitif before I chose. We were offered the Charles Schleret Sylvaner from Alsace to try before committing to a bottle. At this rate you could get through a glass or two before you start paying for drinks.

Hair-product advertising is wonderful. Think what its given us; the arc shot (shiny long hair moves 180 degrees in slow motion); the tumble shot (shiny long hair tumbles down a slender bare back); the computer- graphic hair-shaft situation (scientific miniature magic happens). But the conventions of Big Hair Advertising have that Reagan period look; theyre obviously the aesthetic of a generation before the Starbucks lofts-for-all lobby, the world of Gap and CK one. Fructus is, in marketing- speak terms, a second brands sub- brand. Theres a Fructus look - younger, unisex, not so obviously Seventh Avenue - and a Fructus palette; its citrus, with a lot of lime slices. Its not exactly Hoxton Square, and certainly not Genoa/ Gothenburg/Seattle but its moved on a lot from early Cindy Crawford. So we get a girl with bad hair - frizzy hair - pouting miserably, in black and white. “Is frizzy hair doing your head in?” says the voiceover, who sounds like a Saturday morning TV presenter, a sort of Home Counties Mockney Mild. Doing your head in isnt LOreal main brand language, which is relentlessly upbeat (”because Im worth it”). The answer, as always, lies in fruit therapy. Fruits are saints who give you long-lasting frizz control. Fruit therapy lets you move on (and now that really is important language, because moving on is a crucial concept in shrink-speak). You move on to the first day of the rest of your life with fruit micro-waxes. Did you know that fruit contained micro-waxes? Well it does, and theyre combined in smoothing milk (dont worry, haircare language has a higher logic that rises above kitchen pedantry) that makes everything super- smooth. As hair gets straighter, the world gets happier and the screen gets more colourful, as swirly as a citrus lava-lamp or a Gordons Gin cinema commercial. Boys and girls cluster for a Fame Academy group shot and everything is completely life-affirming and as organic as you can get in the aspirational mid-market, 20 through 35.

SARASOTA, Fla. — Stan can be shot and suffer the effects of nerve gas. He can bleed, and he can die. He can even complain or yell out in pain when doctors work on him. Stan, a lifelike medical training simulator, has helped train physicians and nurses for years. Now, hes helping to train military medics and emergency crews who would respond to a terror attack. “The level of interaction we have with him is amazing,” said Jon Rinard, who supervises a nationwide training program for emergency medical personnel through Texas AM University. “It does pull students into a real-time, real-life scenario.”
AN EXTRA 1,000 medical school places are to be created over the next seven years to head off a projected shortage of doctors in the millennium, ministers announced yesterday. The increase of a fifth - equivalent to a new medical school - will take the annual number of new doctors being trained in Britain from 5,000 to 6,000. The committee estimated that the demand for doctors will rise at 1.7 per cent per year over the next 20 years, similar to the trend in the last 20 years. It said that an increase of 1,000 in the annual medical student intake would not produce a domestic oversupply by the year 2020 “under any realistic scenario”.

At first look, Eichhorn Jewelry store in downtown Decatur looks like hundreds of other jewelry stores in hundreds of other communities across the country with brightlylit show windows on either side of the front entrance to entice customers. On closer examination, however, its not youre typical jewelry store, it is a very special place. Patrons first impression of the 35 yearold store is “WOW!” One-hundred yearold vertical display cases with huge windows that slide up on the north wall are expertly lit to highlight eclectic groupings of jewelry. Unlike most stores, the main showcases, the ones John Eichhorn started his business with in 1965, are situated in the center of the showroom rather than along the sides and are also antiques. The floor cases are from 1929 when Keller Jewelry was located in the Eichhorn building. The diamond sorting table in a back room is a 100-year-old wooden library table that was left behind by the previous owner of the building who was also a jeweler. From the showroom one can peer down a short hall at the end of the store to the large steel door of the vault where the company places its valuable inventory every evening. The vault used to be part of the First National Bank in Adams County, which was the only one that didnt shut down in the crash of 1929.
CASE DESCRIPTION The primary subject matter of this case concerns the operational philosophy and actions of a small retail jewelry store. Secondary issues examined include the nature of the jewelry and diamond market, selecting an appropriate target market, developing a merchandise mix to satisfy target customers, pricing and promotion strategies for a small retail jeweler, and store location decisions. The case has a difficulty level of four, appropriate for senior level. The case is designed to be taught in one class hour and is expected to require one hour of outside preparation by students. Jack Adams owns and manages an independent jewelry store in Florida. He is facing a number of issues concerning the stores competitive effectiveness in the local jewelry market. The immediate decision is whether he should move from his long-established store location. Although his store is not very up-to-date, it is in a high-traffic location and receives a lot of exposure. He caters to a middle class clientele, but fancies his business as a higher quality, upscale operation. Thus, there are issues of image and positioning in the local jewelry market among competitors. Other questions concern his lack of effective promotion activities and hours and days of operation. All of Jacks decisions relate to the issue of his customer service and marketing orientation. The case also incorporates global dimensions as it describes the nature of the diamond market.

Property management issues may seem mundane and boring to the man on the street, but they are mission-critical to property owners and managers. As in other competitive environments, property management requires execution efficiency. Its crucial. The difference between profit and loss can come down to issues as simple as mistakenly paying vendors twice or gaining a poor reputation because of unmanaged maintenance issues. With the right software, even a small staff can stay on top of everything. A good software package gives them the freedom, flexibility and power to best the competition. For example, an application like prospect tracking can keep an occupancy rate significantly ahead of a rival apartment complex right down the street.

Reptiles on rafts Prior to the closing of the Central American isthmus the West Indies was open to the Pacific and rafts of red mangrove carried organisms out into the Pacific currents. This is how the ancestors of the three endemic Galapagos iguana species are believed to have reached those remote islands off the Ecuadorian coast. Even more surprisingly, the Southern Equatorial Current is believed to have carried rafts of West Indian red mangrove westwards across the Pacific before turning south towards Fiji and Tonga. This is believed to be the route followed by the ancestors of the two rare Fijian iguanas and three western Pacific boas which are the only representatives of their families in the Melanesian/Polynesian region otherwise inhabited by agamas and pythons. Close interdependent communities not based on family relationships communes have a long history in the United States and continue to represent a strand of American culture and ideology that sanctions the search for a utopia of peace love and equality. Researcher Benjamin Zablocki defines a commune as a group of unrelated people who voluntarily elect to live together for an indefinite time period in order to achieve a sense of community that they feel is missing from mainstream American society. Most commonly associated with the hippie and flower child members of the 1960s and 1970s counterculture communes have professed a variety of reasons for existence and can be politically religiously or socially based and exist in both rural and urban environments. Keith Melville has observed that commune members are linked by “a refusal to share the dominant assumptions that are the ideological underpinnings of Western society.” They are extremely critical of the status quo of the American consumer society in which they live and they promote a new value system centered on peace and love personal and sexual freedom tolerance and honesty. Members wish to begin living their vision of a better society away from mainstream society and enjoy the support of their fellow believers.

How Community Banks Are Using Small Business Lending to Build New Business and Customer Relationships In the past few years, community bankers have learned to adapt to a lot of changes and to deal with a lot of upheaval. Financial modernization has been the main culprit, but other factors have contributed as well: increased lending flexibility, opening-up of competition, new products and changing markets. Among those opportunities is the world of commercial lending. Not so long ago, many savings institutions were content to provide deposit and home lending functions. It was quite lucrative, and their positions as communitybased institutions inspired confidence in their clientele.

August 26,1995 Good morning. Theres an old Native American saying that goes: In all our deliberations we must take into account the wellbeing of the seventh generation to follow. The wisdom of those words has come alive to me during my familys Wyoming vacation. Ive also seen lots of Americans, young, old, and in-between, from all over our country in these parks. Mostly Ive seen families, hard-working families who can afford these wonders of the world because these parks belong to them. So Im more grateful than ever that those who came before us saw fit to preserve this land for the enjoyment of future generations of Americans. That was the intent of Congress when it established the National Park Service 79 years ago today. I can think of few things that mean more to the national life of our country than our national parks.

Nevertheless, ICL abandoned plans to use prison labor, at least in the short term. Though a fair number of prisoners had desktop publishing and spreadsheet skills, and one prison even had six Cobol programmers among its population, ICL felt there was a general lack oflegacy language skills that would be of particular use in year 2000 projects. The company has not ruled out the possibility of future collaborations with the prison service, however, if the situation gets more desperate.

Oral Chelation
Category: Uncategorized | Leave a Comment
The most recent USDA dietary surveys report that about half of women in childbearing years have iron intakes below the mean requirements and some 95% have intakes below the RDA. (1) In another study, the majority of the women surveyed did not achieve 70% of the RDA for iron, putting them at strong risk for deficiency. (2) Albion Laboratories makes an iron that is safe, bioavailable and a true chelate, Ferrochel[R]. Chelated minerals are minerals such as zinc, manganese, magnesium, copper, iron or calcium that are bonded to amino acids. In the bodys natural digestion process, amino acids chelate with minerals and help transport them across the intestinal wall, making the mineral bioavailable. Since Ferrochel is composed of iron and the amino acid glycine, Albion refers to it as a nutritionally functional mineral chelate. Irons role in hemoglobin formation is well known; glycines importance in the process is less familiar. Glycine and succinyl CoA are the starting materials for hemoglobin. Albion Laboratories contends that the other half of the Ferrochel chelate–glycine–is just as important in creating a nutritionally functional product.
Chelators added to pectinase-rich enzyme mixtures increase the efficiency of enzyme retting of flax. The multitude of available chelators requires research to optimize enzyme retting for cost and fiber quality. Of several chelators tested, ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) is the most effective in sequestering calcium from solution, with substantial activity even at pH 4 or 5. Phosphate is also effective, but only at high pH. EDTA and Mayoquest 200, a commercial product with -37% EDTA, in combination with Viscozyme L or Lyvelin, commercial enzymes with polygalacturonase activities, yield high Fried test scores, indicating efficient separation of fibers from core tissues. Neither chelator nor enzyme at the levels tested alone effectively rets flax at a pH of around 5. In contrast, EDTA at 20 mmol/L levels and alkaline pH yields high Fried test scores. The addition of BioPrep, a commercial pectate lyase, does not influence retting measured by the Fried test with EDTA at alkaline pH, but the enzyme does improve retting with the weaker chelator sodium tripolyphosphate. The quality of fibers, as determined by the yield of fine fibers obtained by passing retted flax through the Shirley analyzer, is substantially greater with EDTA plus Viscozyme at pH 5 than alkaline chemical retting with EDTA, sodium tripolyphosphate, or sodium oxalate without enzyme. EDTA is the most effective chelator at acidic pH levels for stimulating flax retting by various commercial pectinase-rich enzyme mixtures. However, other less expensive candidates require additional study for more cost-effective formulations and applicable fiber properties. Retting is the process by which fibers in flax (Linum usitatissimum L.) stems and other bast plants are separated from the nonfiber tissues. This process, which is usually microbial, is the major limitation in producing linen fibers [25]. For commercial flax fiber operations, flax stems are pulled from the ground and dew retted, in which indigenous fungi colonize and degrade the nonfiher tissues to liberate fibers. After dew retting, the stems are mechanically cleaned to remove shive and other contaminants from fibers for use in linen yarns and fabrics. While currently the method of choice, dew retting is restricted to geographical regions with appropriate climates, and the resulting fibers are often inconsistent in quality with significant amounts of dirt and contaminants [21, 25]. Therefore, considerable research has focused on alternative chemical and enzymatic methods to improve the consistency of fiber quality [1, 4, 5, 9, 10, 14, 21, 22, 25]. Increasing U.S. interest in flax fibers for use as cottonized fibers in textiles [4] and for bio-composites [19] globally provides a strong impetus to improve flax retting. The importance of pectin as a binder between cells and the necessity to remove it during retting has been acknowledged for several decades [25]. Therefore, pectinases, and in particular endopolygalacturonases, are effective in retting flax [2, 4, 11, 12, 17, 25, 26]. However, pectin is a complicated polysaccharide that varies in structure [16]. In nonmethylated pectins, often Ca2+ binds carboxyl groups of adjacent molecules, thus stabilizing pectins and thereby plant structure [20]. In flax, recent research has indicated that acidic pectins and Ca2+ are located preferentially in the epidermal regions of flax [18], likely contributing to the structural integrity of the stem and bast fibers. Therefore, complex formers, e.g., chelators, such as ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) to remove Ca2+ have proven useful in retting flax and in facilitating enzyme retting [4, 7, 9, 11, 21].
Stephen Barrett, MD, board chair of Quackwatch Inc., applauded the FTCs action. The government agency, which oversees the advertising of nonprescription drags, has taken an aggressive stance on the claims made by health products in the last two years. He said the agency has filed more false advertising claims in the last two years than during the 1980s. The FTC issued 1,200 warnings after an international health claim Internet surf day Nov. 10, 1998 when numerous agencies surfed the Internet and assessed Web sites. Email the FTC at health-claims@ftc.gov to send complaints or comments about health claims on the Internet. Comment: Heres one effective way for the government to stop some of these rascals from getting the word out. Although its impossible for the FTC to crack down on everyone advertising products with misleading or false claims, such actions may encourage other companies and practitioners to think twice before they push their products. Its also heartening to see the efforts in policing the Internet, which has become a haven for quacks promoting everything.

The baby boomer market is once again influencing a healthcare category. Boomers may hate to admit it, but getting old has its drawbacks. One is the aches and pains associated with a well-worn body. And boomers being boomers, they are not about to just grin and bear pain. Enter magnetic therapy–a centuries-old approach that uses the bodys electricity to help relieve stress, increase circulation, relax muscles and reduce pain. Consumers, who have shown a willingness to try alternatives to traditional medications, are interested. And retailers are sensing the beginning of a significant category. Mass merchants have jumped on the category. General Nutrition Centers feature magnetic slippers in stores. Even department stores are giving the category space: Macys is devoting a table to magnetic products during the holiday selling season.

Halloween is coming. Time to put on a costume and have some fun. But some animals get to dress up almost every day–not for fun, but for survival. Its a fish-eat-crab world out there. Octopuses, starfish, and lobsters also love to dine on crabmeat. But the decorator crabs pictured here have a tricky way to cover up and hide from their enemies. They simply “decorate” themselves with parts of plants or animals from the seafloor. And then, ta-dah! They can scurry along almost unseen. Other kinds of animals, too, use “dressing up” as a way to hide from predators.
A pirates sash, a musketeers blouse and a 1920s flapper girl fringe are some of the many costumes created out of Thad Hansens love of reading about the past. Hansen is owner of Salt Lake Costume, and in his business, researching history is a necessity in designing wardrobes for different time periods. As a youngster Thatcher read Hardy Boys books along with John Jakes “American Bicentennial Series,” which follows a family line through a number of centuries and adventures. But now some of his favorites are J.R.R. Tolkiens “Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit” as well as Alexander Dumas “Man in the Iron Mask” and “Count of Monte Cristo.” “Those books (Tolkiens) are well-done, and I kind of like fantasy- type books with different words,” said Hansen.

If youre forced to take cabs everywhere as a result, or if you booked an inexpensive suburban hotel (thinking youd have a car to bring you to meetings downtown) and need to stay in a more expensive downtown hotel as a result, then the rental car company you made reservations with should reimburse you. After all, the company breached its contract with you, and should make good for any reasonable expenses you incurred as a result. Taxi! Visitors to the nations capitol are in for smoother taxi rides. The current confusing zone fare system will be replaced, at a date to be determined, with metered fares. Beginning in June 1998, drivers applying for new licenses cannot have a vehicle older than six years old. Faster European trains If youre planning a visit to Switzerland and Italy this summer, RailEurope has good news for you: the Swiss rail system has expanded the use of super-fast “Pendolino” trains between Milan and Geneva, Basel, Bern and Zurich. These ultra-modern trains tilt slightly when going around curves, which means that the train neednt slow down (it also means that your coffee wont spill). With speeds up to 150 miles per hour, the new trains shave up to an hour off previous schedules, making the train an even better way to view spectacular Alpine scenery. Your Eurailpass is good on these special trains, although you may have to pay a small supplement to reserve a seat. To buy an Eurailpass call (800) 4EURAIL or (800) 438-7245 or see a travel agent. Was the money stolen, he wonders, or did you lose it? On the whole, he thinks we lost it: `Nothing crooked - just bad luck and bad brains met together in an effort to do something that couldnt be done in the first place. In soaring markets (in the 1920s, which he saw at first hand, or the 1990s) everything seems possible, and we settle down, like the Red Queen, to believe six impossible things before breakfast. If we believe in wonders, we are prepared to believe the wonder-workers. After all, we want to. Only when the illusion is shattered do we want to take their yachts away.
The International Yacht Restoration School on the waterfront of Newport, Rhode Island, reports additional progress on its major restoration project, the last remaining luxury American yacht, Coronet, built in 1885. It is a longterm project and was mentioned in this column in April 1996.In the july 1938 issue of Country Life and the Sportsman, we learned that Coronet, 152 tons, began her illustrious career by defeating Dauntless in a mid-winter race from New York to Queenstown. She covered the 2905 miles in 14 days, 19 hours and three minutes and 14 seconds.Soon after that race she sailed around the world. That was followed with four voyages to Europe and two to the West Indies. The article also noted that Coronet was the first registered yacht to round Cape Horn from east to west. The item concluded, “She was a great ship and a brave one.” There is no question that the IYRS will make her a “great ship and a brave one.”

Students gather knowledge, strength and discipline
Black Belt Karate 575 Lexington Avenue, 23rd Floor, New York, NY 10022
Karate Kid and Karate Kid II, both VHS and DVD, have a lot to say about discipline, teachers and being true to yourself. In the first film, Daniel, a teenager having a hard time adjusting to a new town, takes up karate and Teams from his Japanese teacher, Mr. Miyagi, about maturity and mastery of self. In the sequel, Daniel travels with Mr. Miyagi to Japan, where they both face challenges. Once again, a pure heart and a clear mind are needed. (Columbia TriStar, both PG).

The things some people will do for a white Christmas.
Thanks to a pharmacological breakthrough, The “polypill” will soon be with us. Combining six different heart medications in one supercharged tablet, its the latest in a line of pharmaceutical attempts to banish heart disease. What a sad indictment of our attitude to health that we could consider such mass medication as a solution for a health epidemic whose causes are clearly apparent and could be virtually eradicated through education and personal responsibility. The Western “cardiovascular crisis” could be consigned to history with a change in attitude and a willingness to implement what we already know. Why wait for the polypill when you can make a real difference to your heart health, starting today. When it comes to preventing a heart attack or stroke, little changes will cumulatively pay big dividends.
Monday May 5, 2003 will go down in history as a day to remember in employment law. It was the day the long-debated amendments to the Health Safety in Employment Act finally came into effect. Why is this new legislation so important? The term “workplace stress” took on a whole new significance, with new obligations for employers, and potentially serious financial consequences for those who ignore them. Workplace stress is no longer simply a sad fact of life. It is now an officially recognised and legislated “workplace hazard”, with the amendments extending the definitions of “harm” and “hazard” to include physical and mental harm caused by work-related stress. A cursory reading of the new legislation might be enough to instantly treble employers workplace stress, but a deeper understanding goes some way to restoring mental equilibrium. The Occupational Safety and Health booklet, Healthy work, Managing Stress in the Workplace, tells employers that “there is only a requirement to manage work stressors or the individuals stressed situation where you can be reasonably expected to know about the stress. Even then the obligation is only to do what is reasonably practicable in the circumstances.”

That, in essence, is the conventional argument on where the private shareholder stands. According to Sir Mark Weinberg, chairman of a committee set up by the Stock Exchange to examine whether the private investor is a dying breed, there is some truth in all this. But his committees report, published last month, predictably got a poor press, with most commentators saying that he had failed to come up with enough specific recommendations to reverse the trend. Sir Marks real offence seems to have been that he failed to criticise strongly enough the Stock Exchanges new rule allowing companies to exclude private investors from most new issues if they so choose. It was this decision which originally prompted the setting up of the committee. In addition, he said it was largely up to the financial services industry, rather than the Government or the Stock Exchange, to come up with ways of tempting more private shareholders back into the fold. Neither conclusion was guaranteed to win any plaudits from a constituency which prefers decisive-looking actions to well-meant words, and which has long marked the Stock Exchange down, not entirely without justice, as an enfeebled and not very effective organisation. Yet, in my view, Sir Mark is largely right on both counts. In fact, I would go further in saying that the outlook for private shareholding is probably brighter now than it has been for some time - partly because of new technology, and partly because of the recent changes in the financial services industry, which have introduced much more effective competition.
Certainly not a remarkable lady called Anne Scheiber, whose exploits in the stock market have just come to light. For those of you who may have missed the story, this is the lady who spent her working life as a tax clerk in the Internal Revenue Service (the American equivalent of our Inl
